Featured Works (part 1)
In addition to composing for the concert hall, Lauren Biggs releases original songs under her artist name, Laureli Amadeus. Let’s explore a few songs.
Captain Murphy (Birchwood, 2022)
“Captain Murphy” is the third track from my 2022 album, Birchwood. The lyrics were inspired by the idea of Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” It combines the frustration of observing humankind’s downward spiral, whilst also earnestly calling out to God for personal salvation and healing. I attempted to depict someone yearning to be saved, while also trying to tune out the nihilism present in our generation. Looking back, it’s probably the most irony-heavy song I’ve ever published.
“Wring me out of sin like anybody else
Take my hand and lead me to a richer field
Of milk and honey
‘Cause I’m ill”
From The Rubble Up (Single, 2023)
“From The Rubble Up” (2023) was a commission for Kaleo chapel at APU. It was my first attempt at an R&B style tune, and ended up being really fun to write and produce. The theme of the semester was the book of Nehemiah, which recounts the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, hence the themes of lament and restoration.
“Lord, my city’s in ruins
I say to the King of my Heart:
My body ain’t ill
But there’s an aching in my soul
My soul”
When I Was Falling (Single, 2023)
“When I Was Falling” (2023) is a song inspired by the show Good Omens, which focuses on two characters: an angel and a demon, who meet in the Garden of Eden and gradually fall in love throughout the show. This song is written from the perspective of the demon, who longs for the attention of his angel, but struggles with crippling emotional constipation.
“My stunning star, my feathered flame
I love you even more each day
I don’t know how or if you know
But my lovely love, don’t let me go”
