Featured Works (part 3)

In addition to composing for the concert hall, Lauren Biggs releases original songs under her artist name, Laureli Amadeus. Let’s explore a few songs.

Flashbulb (Birchwood, 2022)

“Flashbulb” is one of the more experimental tracks from Birchwood, using scordatura (unusual tuning) in the ukulele, and even some fun, unconventional vocals / sound effects. The title “Flashbulb” comes from the phrase “flashbulb memory”—a highly vivid memory which declines in accuracy over time. This phrase resonated with me and ultimately inspired the song, since I often find myself caught up in strong memories, warping them with my own agendas to seem better or worse than they were in the moment. The lyrics reflect on my self-doubt and childhood influences, and the song ultimately ends on an ironic plea for the world to stop being so mean, when in reality, most of my inner turmoil is self-inflicted.

red & blue (Single, 2021)

Gooey love song, infused with some color theory.

The Black Moth (Songs Inspired by Encanto Vol. 2, 2022)

“The Black Moth” hails from one of my most streamed albums, Songs Inspired by Encanto, Vol. 2. The lyrics depict a protagonist who has been ostracized by his family for telling the future. He mourns his childhood, as he was forced to grow up too fast due to his prophetic gift. The song emphasizes the estranged relationship between the protagonist and his mother, neither able to fully understand the other.
